Gingivitis
What is gingivitis?
Gingivitis is an infectious disease of the gums caused by the buildup of dental plaque around the teeth. The bacteria in the plaque cause inflammation, redness, and bleeding of the gums.
Is it possible to control gingivitis?
Yes. With proper oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist, gingivitis can be controlled. The first treatment includes a professional cleaning of tartar and plaque, after which the patient is given instructions on proper tooth brushing and gum care at home.
Why is it important to treat gingivitis on time?
Untreated gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, a more serious disease that damages bone and leads to loosening or loss of teeth. That’s why early treatment is key to maintaining a healthy smile.
