What is endodontics?
Endodontics is a specialty in dentistry that deals with diseases of the dental pulp (nerve of the tooth). Most often, endodontic or root canal treatment is required for complicated caries that has reached and infected the nerve.
When is root canal treatment necessary?
Most often in the presence of:
- spontaneous pain
- sensitivity to hot and cold
- pain when touched and chewed
- appearance of a fistula or abscess
For an accurate diagnosis, the dentist performs an examination and X-ray to determine the appropriate treatment.
Is there pain during treatment?
No. Endodontic treatment is performed under local anesthesia and provides complete comfort without pain.
What is the purpose of endodontic treatment?
The main goal is to eliminate inflammation, preserve the natural tooth, and prevent more serious complications or extraction.
